Jan Van Eyck, one of the greatest artists of his time, drew this painting in 1434.
It is one of the first paintings with a signature on. He wrote "Jan Van Eyck was here" on top of the mirror in which we can see the artist as well.
I really like this painting. Not only because it is brilliant but also the symbolism it uses and the questions it raise.
For instance is the lady in the painting pregnant or not? If yes a baby conceived before marriage should have been sinful. What does the dog symbolise? Faithfulness? Or just an ordinary dog. What about the candle? Is it the light of god? Why only one candle? What about the two pairs of slippers?
If a painting depicting such an ordinary scene makes us ask questions after 575 years than for me it really is a piece of art.

The woman in this painting is wearing a houppelande. She's not pregnant. This garment was very full, pleated, and heavy. Women would often pull it up on their bellies (it was belted under the breasts to give shape to the body) when standing or walking because it was heavy and made movement easier.
